Earth is dangerously close to becoming a “hothouse”, scientists warn.
Following a summer marred by wildfires and heatwaves, news about temperature rising aren’t getting any better.
New research shows that temperature and sea levels rise can make certain parts of the globe “uninhabitable”.
Multiple scientists have identified that such a hothouse threshhold will be reached when temperatures are only 2C higher than they were before the Industrial Revolution.
Recent studies show that they are 1C higher and going up. The climate of hothouse Earth will stabilise at 4-5C above the pred-industrial temperature average.
If that trend continues, people living at the equator and the tropical parts of the planet will have to pack their bags and move north.
The study, published by the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, warns that everyone needs to participitate in a concerted effort to combat that.
Massive changes in social values will be required to combat that: “Such action entails stewardship of the entire Earth System—biosphere, climate, and societies.
“It could include decarbonization of the global economy, enhancement of biosphere carbon sinks, behavioral changes, technological innovations, new governance arrangements, and transformed social values.”
