Often with space rock you get the feeling you really are floating in a wonderland with no way home. The line used by Major Tom applies so well to ‘And Nothing Hurt’ that you have to feel there really is a spiritual link between Bowie and the crew from Rugby. The introspective ambience of this album doesn’t allow for much up tempo but it still manages to draw the listener in through trippy passages that play off against more substantial foundations. The whole thing is a balance between staying tethered and floating away and it stays in orbit quite nicely most of the time.
