A gunman opened fire at Christmas Hill Park during the last day of the Gilroy Garlic food festival in Northern California on Sunday, in which four people have been killed including the suspected gunman, around 15 people injured.
Holding a rifle the gunman entered the festival by cutting through a fence to avoid the tight security and the metal detectors according to the Police.
Police arrived the spot immediately after shoot started at 5:45 p.m. and they killed the gunman moments later, said Scot Smithee, who heads the Gilroy Police Department.
Police officer Smithee is suspecting that there maybe a second person to be connected to the shooting, but it was still unclear.
“A second suspect was involved in some way, we just don’t know in what way” said Smithee.
No further details has been released on the identity of the suspects or the victims. The police chief said the motive behind the killings remained unclear.
With dozens of law enforcement officers from agencies around the region swarming the scene, the scene was still active late Sunday night.
According to the witness, a gunman armed with a rifle and dressed in what looked like a tactical vest and camouflage fatigues.
A witness, Taylor Pellegrini, said she was sitting on a bench near the food court with her boyfriend and two friends when she heard the sound of firecrackers. When the pops continued and people started running, she realized they were in danger.
“It’s just incredibly sad and disheartening that at an event that does so much good, the community had to suffer from a tragedy like this,” said Smithee.
The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, said his office is monitoring the situation closely.
