Looking after your skin doesn’t have to cost the planet. This week, Tara Pilkington brings you the best ethical skincare brands that you can introduce to your routine.
Upcircle Beauty
Upcircle Beauty turns leftover natural ingredients with more to give into quality skincare products which are natural, sustainable, vegan and cruelty-free. They are a great example of a circular beauty brand which uses industry by-products that would otherwise go to landfill.
Neighbourhood botanical
Neighbourhood Botanicals is a London brand which was founded by an Australian sound engineer who wanted to create products that could help restore the damage of her rock’n’roll touring lifestyle. The brand’s four facial oils are all made in small batches, and come in recyclable glass apothecary jars with illustrated labels that could be mistaken like indie film posters.
BYBI
BYBI is a huge hit on Instagram and proves that it’s possible to make a beautiful-looking, highly covetable product without harming the environment! The entire range uses glass or bioplastic tubes derived from sugarcane and are sent in grass paper boxes, saving up to 4,800 tonnes of C02emissions! The products are also often made from food industry by-products.
Weleda
More than 75% of Weleda’s plant ingredients come from biodynamic or organic farming, or controlled wild collection. As a brand, they are commitment to biodiversity and the ethical treatment of their workers. They have also been recognised by the Union for Ethical BioTrade, and it is one of only two beauty brands to carry the UEBT mark and was the first to earn a Look For The Zero badge, showing none of its products contains any form of plastic.
REN Skincare
REN have made a commitment to be zero waste by 2021, in a bid to move towards the elimination of unnecessary packaging. They have also partnered with organisations such as TerraCycle and Surfrider and are stopping sample sachets and using recycled ocean plastic in packaging. All of their products use pH balanced formulas that won’t upset your skin.
