Rapper DaBaby paid a touching tribute to George Floyd during a powerful performance at the BET Awards. Puza Snigdha reports.
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to develop across the globe, the BET awards 2020 this year hosted a virtual event on Sunday which featured performances from Black artists exploring what the Black experience is today.
The popular rapper DaBaby performed while a police officer pressed a knee on his neck, as a direct nod towards the last moments of George Floyd’s life which have since inspired the Black Lives Matter movement across the globe. The performance then transitioned to DaBaby rapping a verse from the Black Lives Matter remix of his hit song “Rockstar.”
The rapper’s co-artist surrounded him on the stage wearing black t-shirts reading “I AM GEORGE FLOYD,” “BLACK LIVES MATTER,” “I AM BREONNA TAYLOR”.
The track “Rockstar” was originally released in April as a part of DaBaby’s third studio album, ‘Blame It On Baby’, and was re-released with the title Black Lives Matter remix in June.
The remix featured alternative verses that depicts the rapper’s own experiences of racism and run-ins with the law.
Rappers DaBaby and Roddy Ricch have recorded performance of their 2020 collaboration ‘Rockstar’ for the BET Awards.
