“I guess you’ve realised that this is over. Our people have sacrificed us. Or at least me”. This is what a message that the former Catalan president Puigdemont sent to a fellow pro-independence MP.
The text message was caught on camera and broadcast on Spanish television. It reflects that Puigdemont, who has been in exile since Catalonia has been under direct Spanish rule, is starting to lose faith.
Round about the same time these messages were caught on camera, Puigdemont issued a public message on social media showing he still intended to take up the post of president after the pro-independent parties managed to keep their majority in the Catalan Parliament in the December election.
Some of his fellow members of parliament are asking him to step down so that someone else can hold the post of president and take over the independence movement.
In the texts, Puigdemont also said that the Spanish government had won this time and that he hoped that that would mean the release of four pro-independent leaders in prison. He himself is in exile because his return to Spain would mean his incarceration for rebellion and sedition.
When the messages were made public showing his loss of faith in the achievement of independence for the Catalan people, Puigdemont took to Twitter saying “I am a journalist and I have always understood that there are limits, such as privacy, which should not be violated. I am human and I, too, have moments of doubt”.
