International Women’s Day or Women’s Day is observed on the 8th of March annually worldwide.WhatsOn music editor Adam Humphries brings you a few of the gems in the Women’s Day songs collection. Make sure to add them to your playlist!
Destiny’s Child – Independent Woman (pt1)
One of the official soundtrack to the 00’s rebooted Charlie’s Angels. The lyrics actually big it up for the women and are about being able to achieve things by themselves.
Aretha Franklin and Eurythmics – Sista’s Are Doin’ it For Themselves
A classic 80’s track featuring two powerhouse talents; soul legend Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox of Eurythmics. This is definitely a Feminist Anthem and is about empowering women and telling them that they can achieve things for themselves
Jessie J – Do it Like a Dude
Might as well be a Feminist Anthem for the 00’s generation and is about girls being able to do the same as men both on the dance floor and off and not being scrutinised for it
“I can do it like a brother, do it like a dude/grab my crotch, wear my hat low like you”
Sugababes – Here Come the Girls
This one has a similar sort of message to what Spice Girls gave in their music, women getting together and enjoying and celebrating being a woman as well as celebrating themselves, their bodies, and feminity.
Bananarama – Venus
An iconic 80’s dance update on a 60’s rock classic and definitely one for a women’s night out. Sassy and bold lyrics and a reference to women being in control of themselves and having men practically go wild for them.
