The singer Lorde sent out a snarky tweet earlier today which seemed to be aimed at the awards show – and who could blame her, after it transpired that Lorde, Album of the Year nominee, wasn’t invited to give a solo performance at Sunday night’s ceremony.
Whilst she did attend the ceremony itself, the artist didn’t perform on the night after turning down the opportunity to take part in a tribute to the late Tom Petty. For that reason the Grammys took the decision choosing to offer a performance slot to every nominee in the Album of the Year category apart from Lorde.
Lorde’s latest comments could be imposed to comments made by Grammys President Neil Portnow, who drew extensive criticism for his take on the lack of female award-winners last night.
“It has to begin with… women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level,” Portnow said. “[They need] to step up because I think they would be welcome.”
During last night’s ceremony, Kiwi singer Lorde sewed the words of artist Jenny Holzer to the back of her gown, sharing a close-up photo of the message on Instagram.
