A device designed to trap about 1.8tonnes of plastic in the ocean, redeployed into the ocean after major malfunction.
The device is designed in a way where it traps plastic that floats in the ocean without harming any of the marine life. In late 2018, the floating boom broke apart releasing all the trapped plastic back into the ocean. This was tweeted by Boyan Slat, the creator of the Ocean Cleanup project.
September 2018 saw the U -shaped barrier being towed into the ocean from San Francisco.
During it’s four months at sea the barrier broke releasing the plastic back into the ocean.
In July 2019, after four months of repair, the device was sent back into the ocean.
