Now available on Amazon Prime, this film follows Billi (Awkwafina) and her family as they return to China under the guise of a fake wedding to stealthily say goodbye to their beloved matriarch, the only person that doesn’t know she only has a few weeks to live. A touching movie which is a must-watch for those who enjoy movies which explore family dynamics.
Pride, staring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West
Initially released back in 2014, Pride is now available on Amazon Prime and tells the incredible true story of how, realising that they share common foes in Margaret Thatcher, the police and the conservative press, a London-based gay and lesbian activists offered their support to striking miners in 1984 Wales. A great movie which will equally lift your spirits and inspire you to fight for equality.
Blinded by the Light, staring Viveik Kalra, Hayley Atwell, Dean-Charles Chapman
Blinded by the Light follows Javed, a Pakistani teenager, who experiences racial and economic turmoil while living in Luton, England, in 1987. He writes poetry as a way to escape the intolerance of his hometown and the stubborn views of his traditional father. When a classmate introduces him to the music of Bruce Springsteen, Javed sees parallels between the singer’s powerful lyrics and his own working-class environment.
Lost in Translation, staring Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray
This beautifully directed film Sofia Coppola is set in Tokyo, under the bustling city life and lights, and follows the two main characters from different generations as they build a surprising friendship on the common bond that they don’t have anything to do while they are in Tokyo. The film is a slow, dreamy and the perfect escapism for these times.
Good Time, staring Robert Pattinson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Barkhad Abdi
