Mass migration of labour and social division were among the key factors to introduce an ‘enclave economy’ within the tea estates, which still exist in the post-colonial years. The ghost of the centuries-old feudal structure is still evident in these so-called estates as a form of master-slave relation. The labours are paid 85 a day or less. They have no access to education, accommodation, healthcare, sanitation, workplace safety; and there are gender discrimination — all these exploitations complement a theoretical framework that produces the cheapest labour in the global economy. In this photography exhibition Faiham Ebna Sharif’s camera bears witness to their life and struggle. The exhibition will be held at La Galerie.
